Starn was born in Hodgeland, an unremarkable place only made notable by its status as the last settlement before Martha. Martha, being on the other side of Bleakpass, was not an easy place to reach. This made Hodgeland a hotspot for travelers, adventurers, and those that simply had to go Martha, for one reason or another. This was a hard place for any young person to live, adventure always at their fingertips.

When Starn was 15, he snuck away from home with a pair of young adventurers whose promises of excitement were too great to pass up. They set out for Bleakpass with a sled of supplies and quickly found themselves caught in a mountain swell. Unequipped for a situation like this, the inexperienced adventurers set up a quick camp to try and protect themselves from the rolling snow and powerful winds. As Starn lay in his sleeping back and the adventurers attempted to hold the tent down, a great gust threw the canvas back and threw them into nearby rocks. It knocked them both out instantly. Starn attempted to get them up, but before he could, a massive avalanche began down the rocky face of Bleakpass’s northern wall, right towards the two adventurers. He was forced to leave the adventurers and ride their sled to safety. After the avalanche had subsided, he went back up to try and recover their bodies, but the snow was too deep.

Starn returned to his home in Hodgeland back the way he came. He had been gone less than a day. He never told anyone what had happened, only that the two adventurers had left him behind. For the 15 years since, he hasn’t left Hodgeland once.
